Back in the USA already?!?

It’s been a while since our last post. 5 & 1/2 months if my math is right. We started this blog to track our path in Honduras and assumed that path might continue to evolve over time so we’d need a way to communicate with people wanting to track what God was doing.

We never thought we’d be back in the USA at this time… If so we would not have sold all our stuff and walked away from our life here. We would have taken a temporary leave, put our stuff in storage sheds and moved to “test it out”. But we were 100% sold on our new life serving God.

So for months this blog has been something I’ve avoided. Why? Frankly, I’ve definitely felt like we were failures coming back so soon & trying to jump back into “normal life”. Is that truth from God? Absolutely not! The enemy is crafty though and gives us lies that we easily believe.

For months now I’ve struggled with the “what now”. We made a choice to openly follow God with our lives. Over seas it was clear, we had a mission, a focus, dare I say a “purpose”. Here back in our home town we were just “us”. Nothing special, nothing great. Certainly not out changing the world.

Just everyday people that are desperately WANTING to change the world for God.

Now I work a job in IT at St. James Schools that I do truly enjoy. But I must ask that question to myself, Nick what about “choosing to change this world and never looking back”? How does that fit into the daily life we find ourselves in now?

If I’m being transparent, I do not have a clue. :) I wish I had it figured out.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9)

God has a plan. It’s not Nick’s plan and as much as I secretly wish it was my plan, it’s not. That is a good thing because I know God knows far better than I do. I trust that God will steer us where He wants us. So we are looking for ways to serve God daily, in the here and now.

I think anyone who has been on a mission trip, or God has taken you through something that you just don’t “get” struggles with these thoughts. Look at any blogs where people just took a mission trip and their world views were rocked. How do we find significance in our daily lives when we know what & more importantly WHO is out there that needs help.

All Christians are called to this:

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

The part I tend to skip over is that “all nations” includes the USA.  It includes:

  • my children
  • my spouse
  • my family
  • my spouse’s family
  • my friends
  • my co-workers
  • my business contacts
  • anyone God puts in my path

Is that mission any less significant here in the states?  No.  But can it feel that way?  Absolutely!

God is opening doors for us to show His love to people around us.  Yes, even in our everyday lives that we do not think are all that significant.  I guess the point of me writing this is God can use you.  Chris Foster said it great the other night at church.  If God can forgive & use Paul (formerly Saul that was persecuting & even killing Christians) then who am I to say God cannot use me?

Stop feeling insignificant and start looking at yourself how God sees you.

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be. (Psalm 139:13-16 )

You have influence in the minds of people close to you that NO ONE ELSE will ever have.

What are you doing with that influence?
